Digital Radiography

Older woman in chair with doctor viewing her x-ray.Digital radiography is a technology that uses radiographic imaging, also known as digital imaging, to get x-rays. It employs digital x-ray sensors instead of traditional photographic x-ray film in order to produce high-resolution images. While conventional x-rays are already quite safe, digital radiography uses even less radiation to capture images of your dental structures. Because of the known benefits of using digital radiography, we here at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore) are proud to offer it to our valued patients during your dental check-up.

Types of Dental Radiography

There are multiple types of digital dental radiography available. However, some are more common than others. For instance, intraoral x-ray sensors (which are a superior replacement for film x-rays) are amongst the most common digital radiography scanner available. To capture an image of a patient's full arch, a digital panoramic x-ray also a fantastic option, as it features programs for extraoral bitewing imaging and other essential imaging needs.

Other types of radiography include the dental cone beam systems (CT). This is a 3D imaging program, which we mostly use in the planning for dental implants. It lets us see the oral image in a way that outdated film x-rays do not allow. Another digital radiography option is the phosphor plate x-ray system, which comes with a reusable sensor plate that can capture intraoral x-ray images just like conventional x-rays.

In addition to these scanners, there is also software available that makes our work easier than ever before. Subtraction radiography is one such software that allows us to compare previous x-ray images with new ones to find every little changed detail in your teeth or gum. Combined, these new technologies allow us to deliver you excellent care and service at our office.

Benefits of Digital Radiography

Digital dental radiography has a lot of benefits. One of the more obvious advantages of using it is that you get the x-ray image immediately, unlike films where you would have to wait a day to get the results. This results in shorter dental appointments. Also, unlike photographic film x-rays, digital radiography allows us and the patient to see areas in the mouth that would not be possible with films.

With digital radiography, we can instantly see the images of x-rays on a computer screen. Furthermore, we can store these images of x-rays on hard drives, reducing the risk of misplaced files. This technology also helps us detect all kinds of teeth and gum diseases, and it is super convenient to use as well.

Digital radiography also lets us adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and other image settings. This allows us to see every small detail of the tooth in high resolution. It does not produce waste materials or chemicals that might be harmful to the environment, as well. Also, there is no need for a darkroom, as all images are stored digitally. This makes sharing reports and images more manageable.

There are numerous treatments and procedures that require digital radiography. If you want to get such a treatment or procedure done, or to learn more about the benefits of digital radiography, then please contact us here at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore) by calling us at (682) 204-5777 today.
